Meant to be or made to be? Part 1

On Monday’s episode of “Oprah,” an amazing adoption story was showcased. I didn’t happen to see the show myself, but I read a synopsis of the story on Oprah’s website and was amazed at the tale that was told:

What began as an ordinary Brownies excursion became a life-changing event for one North Carolina mom.

In 2003, Lysa and two of her daughters attended a performance by a boys' choir from an orphanage in Liberia, a West African country ravaged by 14 years of civil war. At the concert, Lysa learned the 12 boys in the choir, and 400 more children abroad, were left homeless after an attack on the orphanage.

As they sang, Lysa says she felt God speak to her. "God just clearly spoke to my house and said, 'Lysa, two of those boys are yours,'" she says. "And, of course, I just went to hear a concert. I didn't go that day for life interrupted."

Lysa and her husband did adopt these two boys, and amazingly, friends and others in their community adopted a total of 31 children from the same orphanage! One family adopted SIX children! The entire story is worth a read, and can be found here.

Lysa’s claim that God spoke to her and told her that two of the boys were hers rings true for me, as I’ve had similar experiences with our own adoptions. I’ve already written about the dream I had about our first adopted daughter. This dream removed any doubt I may have had that the child we were about to bring into our family was the one God intended us to have. With our second adopted daughter, we had a very clear answer to our prayers about which child to choose from our agency’s waiting child list, and even had the benefit of getting to know the other child’s adoptive family, which further solidified for us that we each got the children that were right for our families. Before we had even decided to adopt from Haiti, we saw our Lulu’s picture and immediately knew she was ours; she may as well have had “I’m yours” tattooed on her forehead. As I’ve written about previously, that she came with a baby brother was a bonus to us, and we never doubted that he should be a part of our family, too.
