Similarly, children may feel strengthened and encouraged to know that once they are baptized and confirmed a member of the Church, they are entitled to the constant companionship of the Holy Ghost. That the Holy Ghost is also known as “Comforter” may be an especially important point to emphasize with older kids who’ve suffered heartbreak. After baptism, the Holy Ghost can comfort them, inspire them, protect them, help them discern truth from falsehood and right from wrong, and help them to gain understanding. All of the “jobs” of the Holy Ghost can translate to feelings of safety and security to older children who’ve had their worlds turned upside down.
I’ve been thinking a lot about our own daughter’s upcoming baptism. We talk frequently with her about the amazing blessing that baptism and receipt of the Holy Ghost will be in her life. We discussed it again tonight during Family Home Evening, and she excitedly talked about when she will be able to “get baptism.” ;) It is a thrill for me to see her so eager to take this step, and we’re working hard to pull it all together for her so it will be as special as it can be. I’ve been contemplating who I’d like to have speak, what music should be played, and perhaps most importantly, what treats should be served. (OK, you
know I’m just kidding about that, right?) ;) My oldest daughter and her friend have indicated they might be talked into singing, and I would love for them to sing “I am a Child of God” in French for Lulu. What makes that idea even more special is that my daughter’s friend’s family is one of those in our ward adopting from Haiti. As I’ve considered speakers, I immediately thought of the friends who escorted our children home from Haiti, and who are also adopting 3 Haitian children themselves. All of these people are very important to Lulu, and especially since we won’t have any extended family here with us, it will be wonderful to have our close friends participate in this way.
No matter who speaks, what we sing, what we wear or what we eat, Lulu is about to take a giant step onto the path that will lead her back to her Father in Heaven, and we are so proud of her for that.
